Newsletter: Term 1 - Week 1

A Message from the Principal

We’ve made it to the end of what I think has been a very good first week. Students have returned to school settled and walking through the school it’s great to see our students already engaging in their learning.

Swimming Carnival – This year’s swimming carnival will be held on Monday 27th February at Dickson Pool. The event will be for competitors only and open to all students in Years 3-6 and students in Year 2 who are turning 8 in 2023. Students participating will need to be able to swim 50m (one lap of an Olympic sized pool) to compete. Place getters may then move on to the regional carnival should their time satisfy the qualification requirement. A detailed note on this event will be sent out shortly.

Voluntary Contributions – Information was sent home yesterday with students sharing information about voluntary contributions and how we use them to enhance the educational experience for your children. The school will also send out an email of this information for your convenience early next week.

Getting to Know You Yarns – Detailed information will be sent out about this today via email. For your convenience, appointments can be made by visiting https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au and using event code eqkzr.

Information Sessions – Again, information about this event will sent out via email today. These sessions will share information about the expected routines for the year and curriculum coverage. They will be held on Wednesday 8th February.

2023 Stationery/Book Packs

Stationery orders can still be placed with winc however there is currently a delivery delay.

The stationery and books that your child requires for the 2023 school year are now available to be ordered through winc.  As advised last year, we are moving to self-purchasing of stationery and book packs rather than making a contribution to the school. Families are requested to purchase the packs through winc as your child will need to have everything listed for the 2023 school year.

Stationery lists were emailed home and are available on the school website Book Packs - Neville Bonner Primary School (nevillebonnerps.act.edu.au)

Please visit the winc website Home Winc Schools and follow the instructions on the stationery list to place your order.

There are many payment options, even zip pay payment plans!

Staying COVID Smart in 2023

Being COVID Smart remains a priority for all ACT public schools in 2023.

Students, staff and visitors are reminded to:

Individual schools may implement additional measures to manage COVID-19 if deemed necessary in a particular setting. Any changes will be communicated to parents and carers.

If your child has COVID-19, you must let the school know. We recommend keeping your child home for at least five days.

RATs are again available from the school for students in term 1 from the front office.

You can read more about how we are being COVID Smart in ACT public schools at https://www.education.act.gov.au/public-school-life/covid-school-arrangements

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL)

This year the staff at Neville Bonner completed a day of training on positive behaviours for learning and the seven essential elements.

Following on from this, the students in all of the classes have started the year learning about our school values. Our school values are kindness, tenacity, resilience, empathy and equity.  These values were qualities that Neville Bonner demonstrated and qualities we want to represent as a school community. Together these make up our acronym of the K-TREE. This week all of the students have been learning about these values in their learning groups and creating a visual display of them. See below some examples of the displays that have started to appear.  Ask your child at home what kindness looks like at home and at school? What does tenacity mean?. How can they show empathy? What is equity?  What does respect look like?

The learning groups have also been revisiting our school expectations of being a safe, respectful, learner. They have used these words to create their learning group agreements.

Over the next term students will be learning about the different expectations for all of the different areas in the school.

Medical Information

At the start of each school year every child is required to have a medical information and consent form completed. Along with this any medication (and action plan) that is required is to be delivered to the front office, and a medical consent form is to be completed. If your child no longer has a medical condition and does not require medication, please let us know.

Any students receiving a swimming carnival note will receive a hard copy of this form (last page ) and can use this to meet the above requirement.

Preschool and new students will have completed this form as part of the enrolment pack and are not required to complete another one unless details change over this year.

Kindergarten to Year 2 students or anyone wishing to access the form please see attachment accompanying this weeks newsletter link. Hard copies are also available at the front office.

The P&C have registered with the Canberra Return-it scheme, you can donate to the P&C by using the mobile number (0497233172) or QR code. The process is:

- Place your bags of cans or bottles into a semi-see-through bag (they need to see it's not general household rubbish), a normal kitchen tidy bag is okay.

- Enter the phone number (or scan QR code), from the flyer, at the return point, follow the remainder of the instructions and attach the printed sticker to the bag.

- Deposit the bag(s) into the hopper.

- The bag(s) will be collected by the Return-It/CDS group and counted at one of their facilities (during a quiet period of their day).

- A notice of deposit will be received by the P&C - Thank you!!!

There are two, close to school, return points located at:

- Gungahlin: O'Brien Place - near the carwash, Gungahlin Vet and Goodyear tyres.

- Amaroo: near theschool oval off Horsepark Drive.

The returns generated from the scheme will assist the P&C to support the school, from sports equipment, school discos, Year 6 end-of-year surprises, etc.
