Newsletter: Term 1 - Week 3

A Message from the Principal

Before School Supervision – I mentioned in my email to families at the beginning of the year that we provide supervision for students from 8:30am each morning on the river and basketball court areas of the school. In the event of wet weather, the gates will still open at 8:30am, and supervision will be provided outside the school hall in the undercover area until 8:50am. Students will then be sent to their classrooms where supervision will be provided. Students arriving from 8:50am will need to head straight to their classrooms.

Parent Yarns – Many thanks to families who engaged with this important part of our school calendar. Overall these sessions were well attended by our community and will position our teachers well to cater for their students this year.

Christian Education in Schools – Christian Education in School will be restarting this term after a number of years off due to the COVID pandemic. Volunteers will come to Neville Bonner Primary School and provide a one hour long session each term. As with all religious education, parent permission is essential and students will not be allowed to attend without this. If you would like your child to attend please collect a permission note from our front office.

Parking – We are seeing some disturbing incidents around pick up and drop off times in our front carpark on William Cooper Avenue (outside the front of our school). Please ensure when dropping off students at school that you do so safely, using the marked parking bays. Please do not drop children off in front of the orange cones which we have put out for safety, nor stop in the middle of the road to drop off children. ACT policing and parking rangers are aware of issues and will continue to visit where possible. The school will not be in the position to support parents with infringements.

Swimming Carnival

This year our swimming carnival is for competitive swimmers only. Your child must be able to swim 50m. Notes were due in on Monday the 13 February so we can finalise races.

For children not competing it is a normal school day.

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL)

We have continued in our PBL journey this week. The students have been learning the expectations for The River and the Hall. One of the key expectations on The River is: We walk on the river. This is a really important one for safety reasons. You can support the school in reinforcing this expectation by reminding your child when they are on The River.

Next week they will be learning the expectations for when they are moving around the school and lining up.  Some of the expectations of moving around the school are: We use the paths and stairs safely and we use the railings for their intended purpose. Ask you child to share what are some of the other expectations for moving around and lining up.  This year, we are aiming to place signs around the school to help our teachers and students know the different expectations around the school.

In week 6 this term, we will be having an exciting competition. This will help us offically launch our PBL! Stay tuned for details about this competition.

Medical Information

At the start of each school year every child is required to have a new medical information and consent form completed . Along with this any medication (and action plan) that is required is to be delivered to the front office, and a medical consent form is to be completed.

Any students who received a swimming carnival note received a hard copy of this form (last page ) and can use this to meet the above requirement.

Preschool and new students will have completed this form as part of the enrolment pack and are not required to complete another one unless details change over this year.

Kindergarten to Year 2 students or anyone wishing to access the form please see attachment accompanying this weeks newsletter link. Hard copies are also available at the front office.

- Enter the phone number (or scan QR code), from the flyer, at the return point, follow the remainder of the instructions and attach the printed sticker to the bag.

- Deposit the bag(s) into the hopper.

- The bag(s) will be collected by the Return-It/CDS group and counted at one of their facilities (during a quiet period of their day).

- A notice of deposit will be received by the P&C - Thank you!!!

There are two, close to school, return points located at:

- Gungahlin: O'Brien Place - near the carwash, Gungahlin Vet and Goodyear tyres.

- Amaroo: near theschool oval off Horsepark Drive.

The returns generated from the scheme will assist the P&C to support the school, from sports equipment, school discos, Year 6 end-of-year surprises, etc.
