Newsletter: Term 1 - Week 5

A Message from the Principal

Swimming Carnival – We had a successful competitors only swimming carnival at Dickson Pool on Monday. Congratulations to all our students who competed in this event. Many thanks to Richard Hudson for his expert organisation of the carnival and the teachers who supported at the pool on the day. By all accounts it was a fun and successful day for our competing students.

Parking – We are aware that some families are parking illegally on Muriel Stewart Circuit, and in some cases blocking off driveway access to residents, rendering them unable to enter or exit their driveway. The school has contacted ACT Policing and the parking rangers requesting increased patrols around our surrounding streets in an effort to reduce illegal parking and increase safety. Please be mindful of our neighbours when collecting your child/ren. As well as being inconvenient for residents, parking illegally can often be a safety issue for our students making their way to a from school.

Author Visit – By now you should have received a note regarding an author visit later in the term. Nicole Godwin is an award-winning children’s author who will visit Neville Bonner Primary School on both the 17 and 20 March where she will present workshops to our students. The cost per student is $4. An alternative educational program will be provided to those who we do not have permission and payment for.

Voluntary Contributions – Many thanks to those families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2023. These contributions are highly appreciated and enable us to buy additional resources to engage your children. We will send out a further reminder email at the beginning of each term.

NAPLAN – Year 3 and Year 5 students will be sitting NAPLAN assessments during Week 7 of this Term. Our coordinators for NAPLAN this year are Janet Hagan and Kerry Johnstone. Please contact them should you have any queries or concerns about the testing.

Learning Group Names

Let’s Talk About It - What’s In a Name?

At Neville Bonner Primary School the choosing of a Learning Group name is an opportunity to do some deep learning and we take the task very seriously.  We know that the children value the Learning Group name, it identifies them, it connects them and it is a memory that will stay with them.

To guide the creation of our Learning Group names we use one of the designated topics as observed by the United Nations. Each year The United Nations identifies focus issues to promote awareness and action.  This year we will adopt the United Nations -

Dialogue has a multi-layered nature. It is much more than a guarantee of peace. It is about security and sustainable development, and building more resilient and inclusive societies. Terhi Hakala Central Asian Ambassador

This is a theme which fits perfectly with our work on Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL),  supporting our core values of Safe, Respectful, Learner.   We are looking forward to a year where our talking will lead to actions of peace.

We encourage you to have a discussion with your student on the learning they did to create their Learning Group name. We think they are clever, creative learners.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing (Year 3 and Year 5) will occur in our school between 15 and 27 March 2023.

Education ministers agreed that NAPLAN would move to Term One from 2023. This will mean results will be available to education authorities earlier in the year to inform school and system teaching and learning programs and will assist teachers to better determine support students need for the coming year.

NAPLAN Online is a more engaging assessment that adjusts questions to each student’s achievement level.

NAPLAN provides valuable information to schools and parents about literacy and numeracy achievement. It supports school improvement processes by enabling teachers to monitor student progress over time and to identify areas of strength and development.

Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in an orientation to the NAPLAN platform during week 5 and 6 in the lead up to NAPLAN.

All eligible students are encouraged and supported to participate in NAPLAN testing. Visit www.nap.edu.au to see interactive versions of the test and for more information.

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL)

The students continued to learn about the expectations around the school this week. Next week the focus will be on the expectations of Waggabiliri, Guruban, East Coast and the front office. Some of the expectations of the front office are that we use inside voices, we move at walking pace, we wait patiently, we keep left in the hallway, we choose one buddy to help us and we have permission.

Our acknowledgments have continued to build up. We have now reached a total of 2900 acknowledgments. Our student PBL team will be approached in the next week or so to see what our next whole school celebration will be.

Stay tuned for next week's newsletter beacause we will have some exciting news for PBL!

P&C Committee - AGM and General Council meeting

Our AGM will be held on Monday, 20th March from 7.15pm in the staff lounge. All positions will be up for nomination, so please consider volunteering. Each role has various levels of commitment, but no more than an hour or even less each week. It's a great opportunity to get to know other parents, school staff and be a part of a wonderful group of like minded people who all have a passion to help support our young people and the broader school community. Our P&C provides services to the school such as canteen, second hand uniform shop, disco and other activities. Without a P&C, we cannot continue to do these things. For more information on the positions on our committee, please head to the P&C Facebook or the Neville Bonner P&C page. We are always happy to accept new members into the P&C.
