Newsletter: Term 1 - Week 9

A Message from the Principal

We have just four days until the end of term. Week 10 will be another busy week for our students where our Year 6 students head to Camp Cooba for Monday through Wednesday. I’d like to publicly acknowledge our teachers who are attending the camp for giving up their time where they will be away from their families so our students can have this wonderful experience. If you’re picking up a child on Wednesday afternoon, please do thank them for their efforts and care.  Our Year 2 students will be going to the National Zoo and Aquarium on Thursday. We are also having a pyjama day for most of our students on the Thursday as well as a whole school PBL reward. The exceptions to these are for our beginning of week preschool groups, who will have a pyjama day next Tuesday, and our Year 2 students who will have theirs early in Term 2.

Energy and Hydration Drinks – We are noticing that some students have been bringing the popular Prime Hydration Drinks to school with them. These are not suitable for student breakfasts, morning teas or lunches and we ask that you don’t send your child to school with these. The best choice for student lunch boxes is of course water, milk or fruit poppers. Soft drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks should not be part of your child’s lunch and are not allowed at school. For those who are interested Behind The News reported on this energy drink this week. It may be worth watching the video with your child here.

Parental Responsibilities on our school site -As schools are comprised of young people who are learning not only to be literate and numerate, but to interact well with others, we can see students use hands and feet with one another. This can be frustrating in particular to the parent of a child who has been hurt. In these events we ask that you approach the classroom teacher or executive teacher of your child’s year group to discuss the situation. Please, under any circumstance do not attempt to interact with the child who was involved to attempt to solve the issue. This behaviour from parents can not be tolerated at our school. Should this occur, the school has the capacity to negotiate more appropriate pick up and drop of spots and restrict your access to our school grounds. As a reminder our executive teachers for each year group are as follows;

Auslan Sign of the Week

This will be the last ‘Signs of the week’ for the term! This week’s signs are assembly and goodbye. 👋

With Neville Bonner’s birthday earlier in the week, some requested a video of Happy Birthday in Auslan. The link below is to Emma Memma signing and singing Happy Birthday.

I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has taken on this challenge of incorporating Auslan in their learning environments. Not only is it creating and fostering an inclusive environment for our Kindergarten student, and other hearing impaired children across our school, but its stimulating brain development and mental flexibility for all students. Thank you to Laisarn, Lauren and Grace for guiding us on this journey. We are very fortunate to have you in our school community.

I hope you all have a lovely break. I look forward to learning and sharing more with you next term.
