Newsletter: Term 1 - Week 5

A Message from the Principal

Swimming Carnival

I was able to attend some of the carnival at the beginning a week and I was really impressed with the students attended. They were so encouraging of each other and cheering on another on for the different races. For those students who qualify for the district carnival Richard will be sending letters home in the coming weeks with details.  A big thank you to Richard for organising the day and all our staff who attended the carnival on Monday.  Thank you as well to our parent volunteers and those who attended the event we really value your support to making the day a successful one.

Parent Portal

You may have seen some recent media announcements about the roll out of a parent portal across ACT schools by the end of Term 2. This will be a secure online communication platform for parents to view reports, explain absences, make payments and update contact details. We are in the process of getting everything ready and will keep you updated as we get ready to launch.

Basketball Clinics and AFL Clinic

Our Year 1 and 2 students have been participating in a basketball clinic with ACT Basketball where they have been learning basketball skills. These clinics go for four weeks and will support students in their skill development and love of basketball. Thank you to Kelly Dunstan for organising these for our students.  Our Year 5 students today participated in an AFL clinic run by ACT AFL and the Giants.

Reading

We are very excited about our new resources to support reading in the early years. These decodable books will support our students as they learn to read. All our new resources were purchased with money raised from the P&C Colour Run last year. Thank you to everyone for supporting this event and our students learning.

Student Wellbeing at NBPS

PBL Focus: Waggabiliri, Guruban, East Coast and Front Office

This year for PBL we are working on in the classroom practices. As a part of this our staff are completing training in these areas. So far we have completed training in relationships, Classroom expectations and rules and Procedures and routines. These are all practices that help us proactively teach behaviours and routines to help get success and increase academic learning time. When creating the expectations we do this with the students in teh class to create shared ownershp of the learning environment. This week I have included a picture of one of these agreements that a class has co-created. They are still finalising their KTREE values displays that they have been working hard on over the past few weeks.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing will occur in our school between 13 and 25 March 2024 for students in years 3 and 5.

Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are engaging for students. The tests are tailored (or adaptive), which means that each test presents questions that may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. This helps students remain engaged with the assessment.

Tailored testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN result is based on both the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions challenging; they may be taking a more complex test pathway.

All Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper.

NAPLAN provides valuable information to schools and parents about literacy and numeracy achievement. It supports school improvement processes by enabling teachers to monitor student progress over time and to identify areas of strength and development.

All eligible students are encouraged and supported to participate in NAPLAN testing. Visit www.nap.edu.au to see interactive versions of the test and for more information.
