Newsletter: Term 1 - Week 6

A Message from the Principal

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Our Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting for NAPLAN over the next two weeks. NAPLAN is used across Australia and the results from this allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of our school community, and against national standards. Year 3 and 5 parents have been sent an email and further information is also below in the newsletter.

Australian Curriculum

This year our school as well as all schools across the ACT moved to the latest version of the Australian Curriculum (v 9.0) for Kindergarten to Year 6. The Australian Curriculum outlines what all students should learn as they progress through school. Our teachers spent time last year learning about the changes in preparation for this year. As a school we have worked together to develop a plan so that students build on their learning during their time with us. Our students have been learning about 'Our Identity' over the last few weeks and are now making their transition to Environmental Sustainability. These broader concepts allow for our teachers to plan for subjects outside of English and mathematics and develop students understandings.

Voluntary Contributions

Our Voluntary Contribution note is attached to the email along with this newsletter. We understand that the beginning of the year often sees many expenses of families and so have held of sending it out in recognition of this as well as the cost of living. The Voluntary Contributions we received last year allowed us to purchase tablets for each classroom to be used to support the use of Seesaw, keyboards for class music lessons and books for our library. We really appreciate and contributions made and put the money towards larger purchases to support students learning and engagement.

Canberra Day Public Holiday

If anyone is travelling away this weekend we wish you a safe trip. For those staying home we hope you are able to enjoy an extra day as family and look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Sylvia

PBL Focus: Canteen and Library

Therapists  and other Allied health staff  at Neville Bonner

Sometimes the school receives requests to conduct therapy such as speech therapy at school during school hours. As a school we value partnerships with allied health staff to ensure we are working towards every child's learning goals in partnership with their parents. In order for therapy to be conducted in school time there are various guidelines and procedures that need to be followed. The therapy needs to align with the school learning programs and be at a time that is suitable so that it doesn't interrupt your child's learning at school.  If you would like therapy to be conducted at school, please contact Haeley Simms via the front office, your therapist can also contact the front office.

We will also sometimes be asked to complete various forms and questionnaires or for observations to occur for psychologists/doctors and other health-based staff. We ask that you give us lots of notice to do these as some of them can be quite lengthy and we want to make sure that we complete them as fairly and accurately as possible.  If you have a form or survey that needs completing it needs to go through Haeley Simms via the front office to make sure we have a central record and can get it back to you in a timely manner.

Thank you for your understanding in these matters. If you have a questions or concerns regarding disability, you can contact Haeley Simms via the front office as she is our school's nominated Disability Education Contact Officer (DECO).

LIBRARY NEWS

When you make an order from our P&C run Scholastic Book Club, a percentage of your total order spend will be given back to the school to help put more books into the school library.  The books below were purchased from Issue 1 2024.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing will occur in our school between 13 and 25 March 2024 for students in years 3 and 5.

Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are engaging for students. The tests are tailored (or adaptive), which means that each test presents questions that may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. This helps students remain engaged with the assessment.

Tailored testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN result is based on both the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions challenging; they may be taking a more complex test pathway.

All Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper.

NAPLAN provides valuable information to schools and parents about literacy and numeracy achievement. It supports school improvement processes by enabling teachers to monitor student progress over time and to identify areas of strength and development.

All eligible students are encouraged and supported to participate in NAPLAN testing. Visit www.nap.edu.au to see interactive versions of the test and for more information.
