Newsletter: Term 2 - Week 4

A Message from the Principal

Teacher Planning Day –

As you will be aware the first of our teacher planning days for this term is this coming Monday. If you are going to send your child to school please let the front office know on 6142 1201 so we can effectively plan our supervision for them in advance.

Students coming to school on Monday will have to enter through the front entrance gates, next to our school’s front office.

P and C Barbecue and Cake Stall

Neville Bonner Primary School is a polling station for tomorrow’s Federal Election and our wonderful P and C will be holding a barbecue fundraiser. As well as democracy sausages, they will also be cooking bacon and egg rolls in the morning. Please support our P and C if you are voting at Neville Bonner Primary and enjoy a delicious snag or cake in the process!

Assembly Attendance –

We are now able to welcome parents back onto site for school assemblies. From next week, parents from the hosting class will be able to attend to watch their child perform and parents of award recipients will also be able to attend. Classroom teachers will ring families in advance of the assembly to advise that their child is receiving an award. Next’s week’s assembly will be hosted by Kevin’s Kindergarten class, and as such we welcome those parents to attend.

Reporting –

With the middle of the school year fast approaching our teachers will soon be preparing student reports for semester 1. This semester we will be providing students with an overall A-E grade, and an assessment of achievement standard statements on a 5-point scale.

While semester 1 reports won’t include detailed teacher comments, parents are encouraged to speak directly with their child’s teacher(s) if they have any questions or concerns about their progress. Our teachers will also continue to communicate directly with you when there are any concerns about student learning or other classroom updates.

Farewell –

Our Kindergarten and Year 1 Executive teacher Sascha Steinbeck finishes up with us today after several years at the school. She is off to Bundaberg in Queensland where her skills will certainly be a plus for the community of her new school. I’d like to thank Sascha for her efforts at Neville Bonner Primary, particularly last term as acting Deputy Principal where she was of great support to me. Sascha will be missed by our staff, students and community. We wish her well on her endeavours. We are in the process of filling Sascha’s position through a recruitment process and hope to have this finalised quickly.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN Online 2022

A very successful NAPLAN assessment window has now been completed.

A big thank you to all the staff and students.

NAPLAN is quite the logistical challenge, organising up to 90 children online at one time, Year 3 and Year 5 students did a tremendous job of applying themselves to the task.

Results are expected to be made available during September.

Kenny Koala Visits

Neville Bonner Primary School is pleased to welcome Constable Kenny Koala who will be visiting our children to support their learning about safety on the road and within our community throughout Term 2.

The Constable Kenny Koala program works towards ensuring children in our community ‘Stay OK’ by increasing their awareness of the importance of safety and the dangers of not staying safe. This is primarily achieved through direct engagement with children through school presentations. Constable Kenny Koala’s presentations this year may include any of the following topics:

Stay OK on the ROAD: Road safety

using safety equipment including seatbelts and helmets

• safe behaviours walking or riding on or near roads

• road rules for the car and road.

Stay OK in the community

TOP TIPS

  • stay close to your parents when you are out

  • make sure you look out for younger brothers and sisters

  • know your address and parent's mobile numbers

  • don't speak to adults you don't know

  • don't take toys or food from people you don't know

  • make sure your parents always know where you are

  • if you get separated from your parents, find someone you can trust wearing a uniform like a police officer or shop keeper

  • it is always ok to say no if you feel uncomfortable

  • if a stranger makes you feel unsafe, tell a trusted adult straight away.

Stay OK online

TOP TIPS

  • treat people how you would like to be treated

  • keep personal information private

  • be careful of people you don't know on the internet. They might be pretending to be someone else

  • don't arrange to meet up with someone you have met online

  • don't tell strangers where you live, your phone number or where you go to school

  • never post your phone number or address online

  • don't send photos of yourself to people you don't know

  • if you ever feel uncomfortable or scared about something on the computer, tell an adult

  • if someone is mean to you on the computer, don't reply and tell an adult so they can make it stop

  • use your privacy settings on social media to make sure people you don't know can't find out personal information about you

  • don't download anything without speaking to your parents first.

Stay OK for life

TOP TIPS

  • think about the possible consequences of a decision before you make it

  • respect rules from your parents and teachers because they are trying to keep you safe and happy

  • it's important to make good decisions now because they can affect your whole life

  • real friends don't pressure you to do things you don't want to do

  • there is nothing so bad that you can't talk to someone about it

  • if you ever feel unsafe or unhappy, remember your network of people who can help; family, teachers and friends

  • if you ever need to talk to a counsellor about something that is bothering you, you can call the Kids Help Line on 1800 55 1800 or visit the Kids Helpline website

  • if you see an emergency call Triple Zero (000).

We are very excited for the first in a sequence of presentations that will be delivered by Constable Kenny Koala at our school over the next two weeks.

Brilliant Barramundi

Year 4 Tam - Brilliant Barramundi - Kandinsky Art Circles

This term the Brilliant Barramundi have been learning about different artists and art periods. Wassily Kandinsky was the first painter of his time to stop painting pictures of things. Rather, he began painting just using colours and shapes. He believed that this let him paint honestly about his feelings.

After creating their works of art, the Brilliant Barramundi reflected on how they were feeling while they were painting and what emotions the colours they had used represented:

Aarav: I felt creative because I felt inspired by Kandinsky’s paintings. I used cool colours because they look neon and I was happy.

Mia: I felt happy and sad. I was happy because I went to school and I was sad because I had to wait to see Priscilla. I used red and blue because red stands for my frustration and blue stands for my sadness.

Ariya: I was relaxed and happy. I used yellow because it reflects happiness. I used pink because it is warm.

Ranuth: I felt calm and entertained because I was able to experiment with colours. I used blue because it is like the ocean and when I’m at the beach I’m entertained and happy.

Emily D: I was feeling happy. I used yellow for joy. Joy for finishing. Pink is for happiness because I was happy with my artwork.

Thomas: I used blue because it reminds me of water, light blue reminds me of the sky, green reminds me of nature and orange reminds me of the beautiful sunrise/sunsets. My painting makes me feel happy because the colours remind me of places I like to go.

Nalah: I used gold because it reminds me of the depths of the world, pink because it makes me feel a heart beat and I used blue because it makes me feel music beats. This painting makes me feel musical, tunie and a bit heavy metal.

Hunter:

Parisa: I felt happy and relaxed while we were painting this artwork.

Mason: I was feeling energetic and happy because the colours I chose make me happy. I used orange, red, yellow and green because I wish I was on a tropical island.

Akil: I used blue because it makes me feel calm. All the colours of my painting make me feel happy.

Ubaidah: The colours I used in my painting make me feel peaceful, excited and mindful. I felt tropical while we were painting because of all the orange I used.

Ben: I felt a mixture of emotions but mostly I felt excited. The colours I used remind me of my friends.

April: When we were painting I was feeling happy because the colours remind me of the happy things I did with my family, like when we went on a road trip. I used green because it reminds me of going for a walk.

Emily W: I used yellow because it makes me feel happy and joyful. My painting made me feel happy and calm because it makes me feel like I’m on a walk.

Alba: I was feeling happy while we were painting because after school my cousin is coming over. I used blue because it makes me feel relaxed.

Pippa: My painting makes me feel calm and happy because I used bright colours. I used green because it’s my favourite colour.

Mehar: When we were painting it reminded me of the times when I was young and I liked to draw. I used lime green because it made me feel like the sun, red and orange made me think of happiness.

Hajrah: I was feeling calm and very happy while we were painting. I used yellow because it makes me feel calm and pink because it makes me feel happy. I used blue and green because it makes me feel sad from picking up litter.

Sreehaas: My painting makes me feel calm. I used a brick colour to be unique and gold to be strange. I was feeling a little confused while we were painting.

Leon: While we were painting I was feeling a bit calm because it felt it would be pretty easy to make. I used blues to resemble oceans, green to resemble seaweed and yellow for land.

Digital Technologies

Digital Technologies in Kindergarten!

Kindergarten have been learning basic skills in coding using ipads. They are now applying some of these skills to control a larger, more complex robot named Dash. Students are working on completing a range of set challenges and will then create their own. They are having an amazing time, all while applying problem solving skills in sequencing, coordinates and conditions. I can’t wait to see how they develop their skills further throughout the year.
