Newsletter: Term 2 - Week 9

A Message from the Principal

Reports and Yarns

We are almost at the end of Semester One with just one week until the end of the term. Student reports were sent out on Wednesday. Should you not have received your child’s report, please contact the front office as soon as possible. You should be aware that we are holding Parent Yarns next week, giving families an opportunity to talk about their child’s learning. If you haven’t done so already, I urge you to make an appointment with your child’s classroom teacher.

Athletics Carnival

Just a reminder to families that our Athletics Carnival is next Thursday at the Amaroo Ovals. If you want your child to attend and you haven’t already returned your permission slip and payment, please do so as soon as possible.

Playground Changes Term 2

Due to a reduction in student numbers since our enrolment peak and the easing of COVID restrictions, all of our Kindy to Year 6 students will now be having their break 1 at 11-11:45 and break 2 at 1:15-2pm (including eating time). With the easing of cohorting requirements students will be playing with some other year groups on the playground and will be able to choose from different playgrounds to play at. This is an exciting time for our students and our staff. The teachers will be preparing our students for this change in week 10 and explicitly teaching the students about our expectations.

In addition to these playground changes the canteen will be trialling over the counter sales every Monday and Wednesday from 11:15-11:45, which will be in addition to the existing times on Thursday and Friday. This will commence on Monday 18th July.

If you have any questions or would like to hear more please feel free to contact Haeley Simms our P-2 Deputy Principal at Haeley.simms@ed.act.edu.au .

Defence Support Mentor

I am excited to announce that Neville Bonner Primary School will have a Defence Support Mentor (DSM) working with our defence students and families every Wednesday. Sam Diplock, one of our excellent Learning Support Assistants will cover this role. Sam has a great understanding of the role where as a parent of children from a defence family she saw first hand the benefits of this role. Sam will make communication with our defence families in the near future.

Year 5 Camp

I have been receiving frequent updates from Kerry with regards to the Year 5 Camp at Stanwell Tops where our students are having a wonderful experience. We will make sure that we put in some photos into our next newsletter. I would like to mention that school camps are only possible with the support of our teaching staff. Without them giving up their evenings and nights to supervise students, a camp simply would not be possible. Students will come back tomorrow, no doubt exhausted, but so will our staff who have given up their time so our students can have this experience. I’d like to thank Kelli, Jane P, Mihalis and Mary for allowing this camp to happen through spending time away from their families, and will pay particular mention to Kerry, who as well as attending, spent many hours in the lead up organising this event to ensure it could be as successful as possible.

Long Service Leave

I will be taking a short period of Long Service Leave next Thursday and Friday. In my absence I ask you to contact our Deputy Principals Sylvia Headon (sylvia.headon@ed.act.edu.au) or Haeley Simms (Haeley.Simms@ed.act.edu.au ) should you require assistance.
