Newsletter: Term 2 - Week 3

A Message from the Principal

We had a wonderful cross country carnival earlier today. The weather couldn’t have been better and reaffirmed our decision to postpone the event earlier in the week. Our students were fabulous – competing hard and cheering on one another. It was great to see so many parents spectating and I’m sure this support was highly valued from their children. I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of Fergus Edwards, our cross country coordinator and the rest of the committee for organising this wonderful event.

Yesterday’s P and C Mother’s Day stall was a big success. Thank you to all involved and all of our community for supporting the initiative. We have a highly active P and C at Neville Bonner and events like these enable them to raise funds to support our school and students.

Year 5 Camp – 71 of our Year 5 students will depart for camp at Stanwell Tops early on Monday morning. They will be accompanied by five of our staff members – Brittany Herrington, Lia Rutledge, Callum Vaughan-Floyd, Richard Hudson and Kerry Johnstone. A lot of organisation goes into a school camp and the teachers’ willingness to give up their personal time to ensure for a different educational experience is appreciated by us all.

Haeley, Sylvia and I were out of the school finalising our preparation for the upcoming school review on Wednesday of this week. We were lucky to have Rebecca Pearce, the  principal of the new high school in Kenny spend the day here at Neville Bonner Primary. She reported back at the end of the day that she had a great day and felt welcomed by our staff and students.

Wear It Yellow Day

As part of our National Reconciliation Week this year, on Friday 2 June (and Tuesday 6 June for the Monday Tuesday Preschool groups) we are encouraging all students and teachers to take part in a yellow-themed casual dress day to raise funds for a First Nations organisation, Children’s Ground. The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2023 is ‘Be a voice for generations.’ This theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and play. As part of ‘Wear It Yellow Day’, students will engage with National Reconciliation Week learning materials and have vibrant discussions about First Nations culture and history. We remind students and teachers who take part to bring in a gold coin to donate to Children’s Ground.

Mother's Day - 14 May 2023

We held our first ever Mother's Day Stall this week and, whilst we have some improvements to make, it was a great success! Apologies to those who couldn't buy as much or what they wanted, we've made lots of notes for next time to make it even bigger and better. Thank you to our volunteers who helped out both with organising and set-up, as well as with sales during the day, including staff (thanks Liz) and Year 6 Helper Helpertons. A big thank you to Fiona for her donation of earrings, and to Amy and Jess as our fundraising coordinators. Money raised from the stall will support the school's PBL Program.

As always, we cannot run these activities without support from our parents, carers and broader school family. We really do need people to step up and volunteer, even if only for a couple of hours. Without you, we can't run events and activities, including the canteen. You see the happiness and excitement in your children's eyes when they can purchase lunch, gifts for mum or attend the disco; please consider volunteering so we can continue to support our school and our children.

Birthday cupcakes

Our amazing canteen team offers birthday cupcakes! Cost is $30 per class, with orders required one (1) week in advance. To place an order, or for more information, please email canteennbps@gmail.com.
