Newsletter: Term 2 - Week 1
A Message from the Principal
Welcome back after what I hope was an enjoyable holiday period. We have had a busy first week with school photos and ANZAC Day Assembly. Our students are also straight back into their learning.
Term 2 will be another busy term, with our five yearly school review occurring in Week 7. We will be reaching out to parents closer to the time as the review panel offers our community the chance to share their experiences, good or bad. Following our review our new improvement focus will be decided upon. I am optimistic about the review process and welcome expert advice in shaping where to next for this great school of ours. I would like to assure all of our parents that you do not need to wait until a review process to have your say about the school. I welcome communication and feedback from all families regarding your child/ren’s experiences at our school. I am readily contactable at William.johnston@ed.act.edu.au or through calling the school’s front office on 6142 1201.
ANZAC Day Assembly – We had our annual ANZAC Day Assembly on Wednesday morning which was attended by all of our Kindergarten to Year 6 students and a number of our parents. Students from Defence Families compered the event and presented wreaths during the assembly. Our guest speaker Commander Stephen Blake, a member of the Navy and Neville Bonner Primary School parent addressed our students sharing some of his experience and background and the importance of ANZAC Day. Our Defence Support Mentor, Wendy Bardsley was instrumental in the organisation of this event as was our Executive Teacher Kerry. Congratulations to all involved.
Cross Country – We will be holding our annual Cross Country on Monday 8 May. We will be holding the event in the middle of the school day, ensuring that the track is at it’s safest and the weather at its warmest. As the event extends beyond our recognised school borders, a permission note will need to be filled in for every student attending.
Reports – At the end of the term, you will receive your child’s Semester One report, which outlines your child’s achievement for this period. After a break last year where schools were not required to produce a written comment, in 2023 you will see these return. All student reports will include a short general comment. This general comment will include information relating to their general work habits and give particular emphasis to their progress in Reading, which is our main focus area for this year.
PBL Tokens – You may notice in the front office there are now three cylinders near the entrance door that will be used as part of our PBL approach at Neville Bonner Primary. Over the next couple of weeks, students will begin to receive a coloured token for exhibiting our positive behaviours of being safe, respectful and a learner. These tokens will be collected in the classroom, and at the end of the week taken to the front office where they will fill the now empty cylinders. Once these cylinders are full, the PBL committee will consider whole school rewards. This will replace our current raffle ticket system and should ensure students receive more regular recognition for displaying appropriate school behaviour. I’d like to thank the P and C for supporting the school with the purchase of several thousand tokens and the cylinder display to get us started with this approach. This support is much appreciated.

Mother's Day Stall
We’re holding a Mother’s Day Stall next term and we need your help!
All classes will have an opportunity to purchase a small gift for their special mother/grandmother/caregiver on Thursday 11 May.
We need some parent/grandparent volunteers to man the stall and assist our senior students managing the money and stock flow.
We have a roster system throughout the day so if you can only spare 30 minutes, we can slot you in. Any help/amount of time will be greatly appreciated.
In addition, if you are available to assist in the preschool stall on Tuesday 9 May, that would be wonderful too.
Please email nevillebonnerps.pandc@gmail.com if you can lend a hand on the day. Please let us know what times suit you.
The P&C is running this event and all profits will go directly back into the school to support the implementation of the Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) program.
