Newsletter: Term 2 - Week 2

A Message from the Principal

The colder weather really has arrived this week where mornings have been noticeably colder. With the colder weather we invariably see an increase in lost property – notably fleeces and jumpers. To ensure that items can be returned to their owner it is imperative that you clearly label your child’s uniform. Without this, it makes it extremely difficult to reunite items with their owner. I’d like to remind families that although the weather is coolers, all students still require a sun smart hat for PE lessons and our two break times. This will be the case until the 1 June, where students won’t be required to wear hats for two months.

Cross Country Carnival – We will be holding our annual cross country carnival from 12:00pm to 1:30 pm this coming Monday. Students are allowed to wear their house colours for the day. Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 will be visiting the carnival briefly to participate in a short non competitive run. Students in Year 2 to 6 will be there for the duration of the event. We welcome the attendance of parents on the day to support their child and cheer on our runners.

Reporting student achievement in the ACT 2023

ACT public schools are expected to provide a formal written report to parents and carers of students from Preschool to Year 12, twice a year. These formal reports form part of the suite of relevant and purposeful opportunities schools use to communicate student learning to families throughout the year.

In addition, our school shares student learning and progress throughout the year through informal processes including, learning journeys, three-way or parent teacher interviews, assembly performances and Seesaw portfolios.

Upcoming written reports for the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2 will revert to business as usual for 2023.

The inclusion of written comments in semester reports remains a school-based decision and is not compulsory. Neville Bonner Primary School will provide a short written comment. This general comment will include information relating to student’s general work habits and give particular emphasis to their progress in Reading, which is our main focus area for this year.

Mother’s Day Stall – Our P and C will be running a Mother’s Day stall next week. Further information is available further on in the newsletter. Students will visit the stall on Thursday. The exception will be our beginning of the week preschool group who will have an opportunity on Tuesday.

Student Accomplishments – I am always happy to receive updates from parents letting me know of their children’s accomplishments outside of school. This weekend three Nevlle Bonner Primary students, Lilly, Telesia and Salina will be competing with  the Passion and Purpose Junior Crew in the Hip Hop National Championships in Sydney. They are hopeful of securing a top four spot which would see them compete in the world championship competition in Arizona, USA in July. All the best girls!

ANZAC Assembly

Last week NBPS held our ANZAC Assembly. This year the Assembly was run by the Senior Defence Club.  The Club also made the Wreath as well as the four coloured collage Poppies for presentation and display. All the displays from the Assembly are now displayed in our front office.  You are all very welcome to go and have a look at how great they turned out.

A big thank you to all of the Senior Defence kids that participated in the Assembly by either being the MCs or the laying of the wreath/poppies.  A very special thank you again to our Guest Speaker Commander Stephen Blake RAN whose sons, William and Henry, belong to our Junior Defence Club.

The Assembly was a big success, and you all did a fantastic and a very respectful job.

Mother's Day Stall

We’re holding a Mother’s Day Stall next term and we need your help!

All classes will have an opportunity to purchase a small gift for their special mother/grandmother/caregiver on Thursday 11 May.

We need some parent/grandparent volunteers to man the stall and assist our senior students managing the money and stock flow.

We have a roster system throughout the day so if you can only spare 30 minutes, we can slot you in. Any help/amount of time will be greatly appreciated.

In addition, if you are available to assist in the preschool stall on Tuesday 9 May, that would be wonderful too.

Please email nevillebonnerps.pandc@gmail.com if you can lend a hand on the day. Please let us know what times suit you.

The P&C is running this event and all profits will go directly back into the school to support the implementation of the Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) program.
