Newsletter: Term 2 - Week 7

A Message from the Principal

School Review – We have had a busy week here at Neville Bonner where the visiting school review panel were with us for four days. During that time, they spoke with students, parents and staff and considered the evidence that we had presented. Whilst we still have not received the finalised report, the panel shared their findings with staff on Thursday. Essentially, the panel found we are a good school and have encouraged us to continue on our current improvement path. I will share recommendations, affirmations and commendations in the coming weeks as part of my newsletter piece. Our senior leadership team will develop our next strategic plan over the next two terms using information gained from this review. In terms of current school focus, we will continue with our strong focus on student reading and implementing PBL until at least the end of the year. Thank you to the parents who supported us in this process. Your contributions were valuable and of great benefit to the review team.

Reporting – Semester One reports will be sent out at the end of week 9 via email. Please ensure that the school has your most up to date email address to ensure these get sent to the current address. You will receive an email next Wednesday with details of parent teacher interviews which will occur during Week 10 of this term.

Author Visit – This week students enjoyed hearing from Cameron Stelzer, a successful Australian Author and illustrator. This is the second or our author visits this year. We are hopeful through bringing guest speakers in such as Cameron, that students develop an even stronger devotion to reading.

Athletics Carnival – You should be aware that we are having our school athletics carnival on Monday of week 9. We are seeking parent support to help us with this event. Ideally we would like 13 volunteers to cover the following roles; shot put marshalling, shot put measuring, discuss marshalling, discuss measuring, long jump pit marshalling, timers for the 70/200m finish and timers for the 800m/100m finish. If you are going to be there on the day, why not offer your support. Please email Richard Hudson at Richard.hudson@ed.act.edu.au

Kindness-Tenacity-Resilience-Empathy-Equity

Safe - Respectful - Learner

School Values and Expectations

You will see above that we are now including our school values and expectations in this section of the newsletter. Our school values are kindness, tenacity, resilience, empathy and equity. These values encompass attributes that the school's namesake Neville Bonner possessed. The students may refer to these as the K-TREE values, which are taught at the start of the year. Our schools awards that used to be known as respectful relationships are now known as our school values awards.  Underneath these we have our whole school PBL expectations. These are safe, respectful and learner. These are what the students are awarded tokens for and acknowledged for.

PBL Fortnightly Focus

As a part of PBL, the PBL team look at behaviour incidents around the school and identify areas that may need to be re taught to students or be a focus around the school. From this, the team identify a fortnightly focus, which is displayed in our front office area and you will also find it in the newsletter.

This fortnight's focus is We are respectful. We use kind, respectful language. Teachers are teaching lessons about how to be respectful and what kind, respectful language sounds like. They may have talked about what kind, respectful language can you use when someone says no or when something happens that you do not like. This is an important part of our school values of  kindness and resilience.

Fortnightly Focus:  We are respectful.  We use kind, respectful language.
