Student Wellbeing at NBPS

Kindness-Tenacity-Resilience-Empathy-Equity

Safe - Respectful - Learner

Social Emotional Learning at Neville Bonner

As a part of our student wellbeing at Neville Bonner we include various aspects of social emotional learning. One of the programs we use across classes is the Ripple of Kindness program. This program is fun and engaging and aims to teach positive character traits and social skills that students can use for the rest of their life. These resources aim to build students understanding of their own feelings  to help them control anger and reduce stress and anxiety.

PBL Fortnightly Focus

This fortnight's focus is We are safe, we move safely around the school.  Teachers are teaching lessons about how to move in different areas of the school. . They may talk about where do we walk and where do we run to make sure everyone is safe. Students at Neville Bonner are taught and encouraged to walk on the concrete and run on the grass, as well as ensuring we are moving safely through our learning spaces. Teachers will be looking for students who are moving safely to give a white (safe) token to both on the playground and in the learning enviornment.

Fortnightly Focus:  We are safe. We move safely around the school.

Author Visit

On Monday and Thursday, of Week 7, an author named Cameron Stelzer came to visit Neville Bonner Primary School. He is also known as the story doctor. Cameron has been a full-time author since 2004. He has written and illustrated thirty-two books for children and has worked with over eight hundred schools and libraries. His books have won eighteen international book awards. We had an author workshop with him and in that students participated in activities and heard the inspirational story of how he was inspired to write stories. Cameron also talked about how he wrote such descriptive language; he used his incredible imaginative mind and imagined the picture and thought of how the words might describe them.

One of his most famous story series is ‘Pie-rats’ and that series had very descriptive language. Cameron’s Pie Rats series of illustrated novels are enthralling reads. Some other books of Cameron’s are The Stroogle, SOS, How to draw and Scallywags. You can find these books in our library.

Here are some of the student’s and teachers' comments about the author's visit.

Aaminah from Year 6, “It was very interesting and entertaining, at the end I wanted to try and read his books.”

Gen, one of our year 6 teachers, “I really like how he shared his writing process and how he immerses himself in different experiences to get inspiration.”

Jackson from year 5, “That was really good.”

Daniela, one of our year 2 teachers said, “ I really loved how he engaged the students at all times and encouraged them to read and write their own books.”

Elijah from year 2 said, “It taught me a lot of things about how to be an author.”

Kayu from year 2 said, “I really liked all the books he made and it was entertaining and the way he taught us how to draw the characters.”

Cameron told us that we should never give up on our dreams and keep trying.

“Read, Grow, Inspire”

-Cameron Stelzer

We were really lucky and fortunate to have Cameron come to Neville Bonner Primary School.
