Newsletter: Term 3 - Week 2

A Message from the Principal

Pupil Free Day – You will have received communication regarding our pupil free days this term. Our first of these is next Friday. If you are going to be sending your child to school on this day, please let the front office know through calling 61421201 or emailing nevillebonnerps@ed.act.edu.au to enable us to plan our supervision arrangements for the day.

SeeSaw – This semester we will be trialling the online platform SeeSaw with our Learning Support Groups and Kindergarten and Year 1 cohorts. This platform will replace traditional student portfolios of work, where instead of at the end of each semester, parents will receive more regular updates on the work their children are producing. Information has been sent out to these families, and we ask that you return the permission note as quickly as possible. Assuming our trial is successful, it is likely we will explore the use of SeeSaw in all of our year groups.

2023 Enrolment Intentions – I will be sending out an email to families of students from Kindergarten to Year 5 shortly requesting for those that are intending on leaving the school at the end of the year to complete a short Microsoft Form to let us know. This information is extremely useful for us to have in advance, ensuring we can have an accurate picture of enrolment numbers per year group.

ICAS Reminder – I sent an email out a number of weeks ago inviting families to register their children for ICAS testing. The online registrations close on Monday 1 August. No late registrations can be accepted.

Reminder on Mask Wearing - Masks remain an important measure to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community and in our schools. Alongside other COVID Smart behaviours, masks can help reduce transmission of COVID-19 respiratory illnesses in our schools. Staff and visitors to schools must also wear a mask indoors when physical distancing can’t be maintained. The Directorate, through your school will keep you updated over the term. For more information read the updated ACT Public Schools COVID-19 Management Plan available on the Directorate’s website. ACT Health has developed an online resource on acute respiratory infections in children which you are encouraged to read.

Sharing Food for Celebrations

We are happy to invite families to bring in food to share for birthdays and celebrations.

We ask that you please comply with our allergy policy and do not include nuts or nut products.

Unnamed Lost Property

A range of unlabelled lost property will be displayed on the River next week. Items include hats, jumpers, jackets and non-uniform clothes. If your child has lost a non named item last term please encourage them to visit the River. Items will be available until next Friday, any unclaimed items will be donated.

Over 40 pieces of clothing have been collected. Please take the time to label school uniform items. If property is named it is much easier to return it to the owner.

2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 19 August to 9 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:

§ An email about the parent survey, including a link to access the survey.; and

§ A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data

If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, contact the school and you will be provided a survey link. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact Reception and we will provide you with the link.

The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.

For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

Seesaw

We are very excited to announce the introduction of Seesaw, a digital learning platform, to further support student learning and enhance communication with families. Seesaw is a digital portfolio that assists educators collect students’ physical and digital work in one place with immediate access to connected family members. Each child will have their own personal journey to add work samples and photos of their learning.

Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and LSP learning groups, and their family members, will be utilising the application for the remainder of this year with the aim to extend to additional learning groups in 2023.

Permission notes went home to all kindergarten, year 1 and LSP students this week. Please review Seesaw permissions and return signed note by Thursday 4 August to the front office.

A support stall will be established near the front office before and after school during week 4, Monday 8 - Friday 12 August, to support families needing assistance to set their Seesaw accounts up.

‘Wonderful Whales’ – What to Wear?

Within the Preschool unit, children have recently been exploring the concept of how we can keep ourselves healthy. Through discussing and sharing ideas, the Learning Group have focused on diet, different forms of movement, sun safety and hygiene practices. This led to children wanting to trace around their own bodies with chalk.

After further conversations, the ‘Wonderful Whales’ continued to consider and share ideas about how the weather and seasons may affect what we wear. Children were then invited to trace around their body on paper before painting clothes for certain weather.
