Library Book Fair

Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair on Monday the 22 of August until Friday the 26 of August. The fair will be held in the school library every morning from 8:30am until 9:00am and every afternoon from 3:00pm until 3:30pm (closes Friday morning).

Our Book Fair Family Event is on Wednesday from 3:00pm until 6:00pm and we would love to see you there!

You and your child will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites.

This is also a great way for you to learn about and discuss your child's interests and every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.

Scholastic Book Fairs help us show students the wonder of reading. After all, when kids choose their own books, they will be more excited to read, and they will naturally read more!

Thank you

Book Week Parade

We will be celebrating Book Week at Neville Bonner on Tuesday 23 August. The theme this year is "Dreaming with eyes open”. On this day, students are encouraged to dress up/accessorize to reflect a book character with whom they connect. Due to the financial pressures on many families at this time, we encourage you to keep this a low-cost event and create costumes from household items.

2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 19 August to 9 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:

  • An email about the parent survey, including a link to access the survey.; and

  • A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data

If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, contact the school and you will be provided a survey link. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact Reception and we will provide you with the link.

The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.

For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

Year 1 Learning Page

For this term’s Unit of Inquiry, the Year 1 Bycatch Busters will be planning and constructing a mini water park. We have been busy researching different attractions and features of a water park. As part of our planning process, we are investigating the different materials we might be able to use in constructing our creations. We discussed the different ways we can manipulate materials through stretching, bending, and twisting. We used cardboard, pipe cleaners, play dough, rubberbands, aluminium foil, and popsicle sticks. We discovered that some materials can be manipulated in different ways: pipe cleaners and aluminium foil can be twisted and bent whilst rubber bands and playdough can be twisted, bent, and stretched. Other materials like the popsicle sticks cannot be manipulated without breaking it. We recorded our observations just like how scientists do.

Parents' and Citizens' Association

Keep an eye on the School Newsletter and the Facebook group for event notices and updates.

The Neville Bonner Primary School Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association is the focal point for parent involvement at the school and provides a place for parents to discuss and debate matters of interest relating to the school and community.

Book fair

Thank you all to all the volunteers who assisted at the Book Fair on Saturday. We had a fantastic day - perfect weather and a really good turn out! At this stage, we haven't committed the funds to anything yet, but we do have some ideas and will be discussing them at upcoming P&C meetings. Keep an eye on the newsletter for meeting dates and come and join the conversation - you are all always welcome :)

Events such as these rely on volunteers and it's always a pleasure to work with such a great group of people. Thank you all for jumping in and making it work! We want to send an extra shout out to the pack up crew who stayed an extra hour to get everything sorted beautifully on Saturday evening! Your willingness to stay on is much appreciated!

We received a lot of great feedback on the day, and we are already looking at ways to improve for next year. We're looking forward to it already. :)

We hope you all enjoyed being part of the Neville Bonner P&C Book Fair.

Return-It Scheme

The P&C have registered with the Canberra Return-it scheme, you can donate to the P&C by using the QR code (or phone number) attached to the newsletter. The process is:

- Place your bags of cans or bottles into a semi-see-through bag (they need to see it's not general household rubbish), a normal kitchen tidy bag is okay.

- Scan the QR code, or enter the phone number, from the flyer, at the return point, follow the remainder of the instructions and attach the printed sticker to the bag.

- Deposit the bag(s) into the hopper.

- The bag(s) will be collected by the Return-It/CDS group and counted at one of their facilities (during a quiet period of their day).

- A notice of deposit will be received by the P&C - Thank you!!!

There are two, close to school, return points located at:

- Gungahlin: O'Brien Place - near the carwash, Gungahlin Vet and Goodyear tyres.

- Amaroo: near the school oval off Horsepark Drive.

The returns generated from the scheme will assist the P&C to support the school, from sports equipment, school discos, Year 6 end-of-year surprises, etc.
