Newsletter: Term 3 - Week 4

A Message from the Principal

Playgrounds -

Just a reminder to our families that our playground equipment is not available for use before or after school, even with parent supervision. Upon arrival at school students in Kindergarten to Year 6 can congregate in the river area where we have teachers or executive staff supervising.

106.3 School Song -

It was lovely to hear a small group of year 6 students and Kerry sing the school song on the Kristen and Nige show on Wednesday morning. The radio station is writing a school song for Caroline Chisolm School and one of our parents rang the station to let them know how good she thought our song was. They then made contact with us where Kerry coordinated a small group to sing our school song Yunggaballi (sing). It reflected very well on the school. Thanks to all involved.

2023 Intentions -

Parents of students in Kindergarten to Year 5 should have received an email on Monday requesting that you fill in a Microsoft Form to advise if your family are intending on leaving Neville Bonner Primary School at the end of the year. This information is critical to our planning for 2023 and we ask for anyone leaving to let us know through this form.

Hats On -

As we are now a week or two in to August I’d like to remind families that we are back to hats on the playground. Please ensure that you are sending your child to school with a sun smart hat.

Book Week -

Our school will be celebrating Book Week during week 6. This is an exciting time to celebrate our love of reading. More information is available later in this week’s edition. We are also holding a Book Fair during week 6.

SeeSaw -

We have started SeeSaw, a digital sharing application with Kindergarten, Year 1 and our Learning Support cohorts. A number of families have still not completed the required permission so will be unable to access this until it is received.

Library Book Fair

Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair on Monday the 22 of August until Friday the 26 of August. The fair will be held in the school library every morning from 8:30am until 9:00am and every afternoon from 3:00pm until 3:30pm (closes Friday morning).

Our Book Fair Family Event is on Wednesday from 3:00pm until 6:00pm and we would love to see you there!

You and your child will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites.

This is also a great way for you to learn about and discuss your child's interests and every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.

Scholastic Book Fairs help us show students the wonder of reading. After all, when kids choose their own books, they will be more excited to read, and they will naturally read more!

Thank you

Book Week Parade

We will be celebrating Book Week at Neville Bonner on Tuesday 23 August. The theme this year is "Dreaming with eyes open”. On this day, students are encouraged to dress up/accessorize to reflect a book character with whom they connect. Due to the financial pressures on many families at this time, we encourage you to keep this a low-cost event and create costumes from household items.

Australian Girls Choir Workshop

The Australian Girls’ Choir are preparing for 2023 and will be running an assessment workshop at Neville Bonner Primary School. There will be a fun and non-competitive 30 minute workshop on Thursday 8 September at 12.00pm with an experienced tutor involving simple rhythm, pitch and movement activities and games. Following the workshop, parents of participants will receive an encouraging personalised written report. Please contact the front office for a flyer and permission note. If you would like more information please contact our music specialist teacher Christopher Pound through the front office.

2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 19 August to 9 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:

  • An email about the parent survey, including a link to access the survey.; and

  • A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data

If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, contact the school and you will be provided a survey link. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact Reception and we will provide you with the link.

The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.

For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

Athletics Carnival

The athletics carnival was in Week 10 Term 2. We went to the Amaroo oval by bus. We participated in many events, such as Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus, races, and much more! We would like to give a big thanks to Richard, our P.E specialist teacher, and all the other teachers that helped organise and run the carnival. Everyone enjoyed themselves there. A lot of people earned ribbons and they must be very proud of themselves. We would like to congratulate those who made it to the Gungahlin district carnival and wish them good luck.

Defence Club

A big thank you to all those who came along to our first Defence Meet and Greet on Wednesday this week. There were plenty of big smiles and eager students ready to get amongst the events for the afternoon. It was lovely to see students from all year levels coming together in our new community space to brainstorm ideas of how the space for Defence Social Club will look as well as activity that they would like to see incorporated.
