Newsletter: Term 3 - Week 7

A Message from the Principal

School Disco - As you will be aware we have our P and C Disco this evening and it promises to be a great evening for our students. Many thanks to the P and C volunteers for organising and attending the event - without this support, events such as these would not be able to happen. I’d also like to thank our school staff who attend this evening, staying behind on a Friday afternoon is a big commitment to our students.

ACT Athletics - Following on from last week’s mention in the newsletter, we have since found out that five of our students did particularly well at the North Gungahlin Athletics Carnival where they have qualified for the ACT Athletics Carnival held on the 8th of September. Congratulations to Andrej, Elijah, Lucas, Nessimeh and Sahana for this outstanding feat.

2023 Intentions - Parents of students in Kindergarten to Year 5 will have received an email requesting that you fill in a Microsoft Form to advise if your family are intending on leaving Neville Bonner Primary School at the end of the year. This information is critical to our planning for 2023 and we ask for anyone leaving to let us know through this form.

Pupil Free Day Reminder - We’d like to remind families that we have another pupil free day on Friday the 9th September. If you need to send your child to school on this day, please let the school’s front office know on 61421202 or through emailing nevillebonnerps@ed.act.edu.au .

Numeracy & Literacy Week

Literacy and Numeracy week are observed annually in the last week of August and the start of September. This year it took place from the 29th of August to September 4. It is an initiative that was started by the Australian Government to encourage reading, writing and numeracy.

This week at Neville Bonner we have acknowledged the week by running a numeracy challenge in all classes. All classes were give a number and a challenge. For example, if the number is 100 what is the problem. By teaching students that problems can be solved in multiple ways, students become more efficient at problem solving and are more likely to see options when approaching a problem.

We have also had mystery readers this week. Every day this week an adult has chosen a book and read it aloud over the loudspeaker and the students have had to try and guess who the mystery reader is. Ask your child who their favourite mystery reader has been?

You can also acknowledge literacy and numeracy week at home by encouraging reading, writing and numeracy. Some of the ways you can do this are:

  • Read to your child

  • Encourage writing- some of the ways you can do this by having them write out a shopping list or write a letter to someone

  • Play Board games- There are some great spelling games like scrabble and monopoly is great for numeracy

  • Count in lots of different ways and talk about numbers you see everyday such as letterbox numbers

  • Jigsaw puzzles and Lego help teach your child problem solving and spatial awareness which is very important for mathematics

  • Investigate units of measurement for items in the refrigerator

Some photos of students in year 2 enjoying finding multiple answers to the problem.

2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

The 2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now OPEN!

As part of our continuous effort to improve ACT schools, the Education Directorate invites you to give feedback in an online survey about your experience of your child's school. Your responses will help your school to identify what it does well and how it can improve. The data will also be used to underpin school improvement practices and inform government priorities, as well as in research projects and longitudinal studies aimed at improving the quality of education services in the ACT.

Please complete the survey ONLINE at

https://acteducation.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0SM21r8U6W56JW6

Your login details:

Your login for the survey is the email you receive school communications from, and the school code for our school BNRP

The survey should take 5-10 minutes to complete, and you can access it from any mobile device until midnight, Friday 9 September 2022. Your participation is voluntary, but we do hope you will help.
