Newsletter: Term 3 - Week 1

A Message from the Principal

Welcome back every one to Semester Two. We have had a lovely first week back where our students have returned well-rested and ready to learn.

100 days of Kindergarten – Today our Kindergarten students celebrated ‘100 Days of Kindergarten’. Many of our students dressed up as old people, donning cardigans, formal shirts and some walking canes to keep in the spirit of the event. Our teachers all dressed up for the event which was well received by our very excited and enthusiastic younger students.

Book Week – This year we will again celebrate Book Week where during week 6. We will again host a Book Fair during this event where families will be able to visit the library to purchase books, and at the same time support our school. We will have a Book Week fancy dress day, which at this stage is pencilled in for the Friday. More information about both of these events will follow in the weeks to come.

ICAS Assessments – All families in Years 3 – 6 should have received email communication around ICAS assessments which we will again be offering as an optional experience for our students. If you would like your child to participate, it is important that you follow the instructions on this email and register them through the ICAS portal. All registrations are completed externally to the school and we will not be in a position to offer the assessment to any students whose parents have not completed registration. Registrations must be received by Monday 31 July at 11:59pm AEST.

ALEA Conference – Over the winter break the Australian Literacy Educators Association (ALEA), held their national conference in Canberra. I’m very proud to say that two of our staff members, Sylvia Headon (Deputy Principal) and Brittany Herrington (Year 5) presented at the conference. The conference involved teachers from across the country coming together to share best practice in literacy, and it was great to have Sylvia and Brittany present some of the great things happening at Neville Bonner Primary with reading.

Safe - Respectful - Learner

PBL Celebration

Last term we filled up two of our tubes in the front office. This week and next week the students will be voting on what they would like as a celebration. These options included a mini disco, mufti day, PJ day, more play time, extra PE time and a few others.

Our Students thoughts on PBL

"My favourite part of PBL is the excitement you feel when you get a token for being a safe/respectful/learner."

"When we get a school celebration."

"We like that PBL encourages us to be safe, respectful, learners. We like the canteen vouchers. We like getting tokens."

"K-Tree leaves at preschool assembly."

"More people in the right spot when playing, less competitiveness/rubbing it in during soccer, more tokens being handed out."

"Gives everyone a chance to do their best."

"My favourite part of PBL is knowing that people will be more kind and respectful."

"Kindness, lots and lots of KINDNESS! (kindness matters!)."

NAIDOC Week 2023: For Our Elders

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders hold the stories that make up the oldest living culture in the world! This year’s theme, ‘For our Elders’, is incredibly important as we reflect on the central role our Elders hold in our lives, families, communities and culture. Our Elders blazed trails, broke down doors previously thought to be locked, and paved the way for us today.

This theme provided us with an opportunity to ensure our young people are learning from our Elders' knowledge and perspectives, and that these continue to be passed down through generations for millennia to come. Elders are cultural knowledge holders, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones.

At Neville Bonner Primary School, students participated in a range of learning opportunities to celebrate NAIDOC week. These included research-based learning, creating artworks inspired from aboriginal values, and many other activities to promote understanding, respect and honouring the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
