Newsletter: Term 3 - Week 4

A Message from the Principal

We are now four weeks into term three. Traditionally, term two and three are when we see highest levels of teacher and indeed student absence. We continue to split classes in times of high absence, however, thankfully haven’t had to regularly resort to minimum supervision. This has ensured our teaching programs have been able to continue as well as practically possible. For your information, I will be taking some long service leave for all of week six and the first few days of week seven. Sylvia Headon, our Deputy Principal of 3-6, will be acting principal for that time, and I’m sure will lead the school well during my absence.

Wearing of Helmets – Unfortunately we continue to see a number of our bike riders arrive at school without a helmet. It is ACT law that anyone riding a bike needs a helmet. Particularly with children, I cannot stress enough how important it is that they wear a helmet every time they use their bike. Accidents can and do occur, and the wearing of a helmet will provide crucial protection to your child.

Dogs on School Grounds – From time to time we see families bring dogs on to school grounds. We ask that you do not bring your dog onto school grounds at any time. Dogs are prohibited from being or near the grounds of preschools and primary schools as outlined by City Services ACT. If you choose to walk your dog while dropping off or collecting your children from school, please wait a safe distance from entry and exit points to ensure the safety of students and your pets. Please do not leave your dog unattended. The exception to this rule of course with relation to guide, assistance and therapy dogs.

Pyjama Day – Students enjoyed wearing pyjamas today which was earned as part of a whole school reward for filling our PBL reward tube in our front office. Our staff have now handed out over 11000 tokens acknowledging students who display positive behaviours. It is great that our students are regularly being recognised for doing the right thing, and I believe this has strongly contributed towards the very settled start of term we have had.

Book Packs – For 2024 we will again be using the company WINC to prepare student bookpacks which families will need to purchase for the beginning of the school year. We will work hard to ensure the price remains reasonable. I am anticipating communication will be sent out at the beginning of next term, and that there will again be a window where WINC will provide free shipping of book packs to they’re ready to go for the start of the year.

P and C Book Fair – The P and C held their annual book fair last Saturday which was an extremely successful fundraiser for them. They made a substantial amount of money which will go towards supporting our school. A lot of work went into the preparation of the books for the event where I’d like to thank the P and C volunteers for their efforts in this space. Particular effort went into the cake stall where Carolin put many hours in to producing hundreds of slices and cakes for sale.

Book Fair - Thank You!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our Book Fair on Saturday. After a wet start early on, it turned out to be a gorgeous day, and our biggest book fair to date! We raised a substantial amount of money, and I look forward to discussing how to support the school with these funds at future meetings.

Special thank yous go out to Bonner Woolworths for their very kind donation of sausages and bread, and to Will and school staff for their support in allowing us to use the hall, out of hours access, poster printing and other admin support.

Events such as these rely on volunteers and it's always a pleasure to work with an amazing group of like-minded people. A huge thank you goes out to the book fair volunteer team. Being able to rely on and trust you all to just get the job done made my role as the event manager so much easier, and you have my sincere gratitude.

And, my final thanks go out to all of the young people who helped out as well. It was so wonderful to see so many keen junior volunteers, always putting their hand up to find another way to provide support. This is testament to the great example we all set for our children around the importance of volunteering and being part of their schooling journey.

I hope you all enjoyed being part of the Neville Bonner Primary Book Fair, enjoy the weekend! - Jayne (P&C President)
