Newsletter: Term 3 - Week 5

A Message from the Deputy Principal

Science Week

This week we celebrated Science Week across the school. Our Science Week committee organised an Innovation challenge where students could submit design ideas. There were some creative solutions presented including a bedside drinking fountain, an expanding shoe and helpful robot. The finalists can be viewed in the library window, a big thank you to everyone who took part. As part of Science Week our Year 3 and 5 students participated in an online webinar with  Katherine Bennell-Pegg, Australia’s astronaut-in-training who is currently in Germany training with the European Space Agency

Year 4

Will and I had the pleasure of attending Year 4 Bonner Arcade  yesterday. The year 4 students have been learning about forces, angles and design principles as part of their current unit - When worlds collide and created arcade games based on their learning. This activity generated lots of excitement and allowed the students to showcase their learning, congratulations Year 4.

Book Week and Book Fair

In conjunction with Book Week next week we will be holding our Scholastic Book Fair. This week each of the classes had the opportunity to preview the books and take home a wish list. The Book Fair is open for sales before and after school next week with a late night on Wednesday until 6pm. Our Book Week celebrations will happen throughout the week with lessons and book readings and concluding with a parade on Friday morning from 9.30am. At this stage the weather forecast will allow us to hold this event outside meaning we can welcome parents and carers to stay and watch.

Seesaw

Across the school we use Seesaw from Preschool to Year 6 to share students learning with our families. This year we have had over 10500 posts added and over 2000 comments. One of the many great functions on Seesaw is that families can comment and give feedback as well as like your children's posts. Next time your child's teacher posts why not add a comment these could include replies such as "I really liked the way you used punctuation in your writing" or "I loved how you explained that new maths strategy". You can like the post by clicking on the heart icon. Students (and teachers) love seeing comments.

Student Wellbeing at NBPS

Safe - Respectful - Learner

PBL  Awards

This week we handed out our second lot of PBL awards. We handed out lots of bronze awards and a few silver awards. These awards are for students who have achieved a certain amount of tokens. We have had children receive the set limit of 30 and 50 tokens for being safe, respectful learners. Congratulations to all of the award winners on demonstrating our school expectations.

How can parents support their child's wellbeing?

Often we get asked how parents can help their child.  Some of the ways parents can support their children are by looking after their wellbeing. Some things you can do include:

Physical- Going outside, doing exercise releases endorphins  and reduces stress hormones

Achieve- Doing something together that leads to a sense of achievement. It could be cleaning their bedroom or helping around the house. It is important to name what the task is and congratulate each other on getting it done.

Attentive- Give your child your full attention and listen to them. Ask them about their friends, teachers and the activities they enjoy.

Teach- Teach your child to think positively.  This helps to boost their self esteem and recover from set backs and failures.

Strengths- Focus on their strengths.  Encourage them to try different hobbies and activities. Explain to them that different children have different strengths and are good at different things.

Fortnightly Focus Week 5 & 6:  We are in the right place at the right time.
