Supporting an Anxious Child

In support of Mental Health Month, the Directorate has produced a short video series to help families support their child if they are feeling anxious. The three videos are presented by one of our senior psychologists. They cover understanding and responding to a child’s anxiety and tips about supporting a child when they’re feeling anxious.

They are available now on the ACT Education website at Wellbeing Support Resources for students and families. Please promote this great resource to your school community through your regular communications.

Magpie Season

It’s been brought to our attention that we have some magpie friends who are very curious of our bike and scooter riders. Especially those that enter our school grounds from Burnum Burnum Close or the path from Muriel Stewart Circuit near the oval. While we unfortunately can’t move or suggest a change in location for them, there are a few things we can do to ensure we remain safe while walking to school.

All bike and scooter riders must wear a helmet while riding. There have been a few more students arriving at school without helmets. Not only is it law, but it will act as a barrier if a magpie does swoop low enough to peck. For extra protection, you could attach some cool pipe cleaners or cable ties to your helmet!

Usually if you hop off your bike and walk it while in these area, the magpies tend to stay in their trees. They only swoop when they feel they, or their young, are in danger.

We have multiple entry points to our school too! You’re more than welcome to come through another gate if you’re trying to avoid meeting our friends.

Market Day

Neville Bonner Primary School staff and students are so excited to announce the return of Market Day this year!

Friday 11 November (Week 5, Term 4)

Every Learning Group has begun planning for the occasion and are keen to get started. There will be a variety of stalls selling items and plenty of fun activities that the children will be able to enjoy.

In order for our Market Day to be a success, we are hoping that our wonderful families and wider community might be able to assist with donations of items.

A list of items required has been emailed home today. Please drop donations off to Reception or send them in to school with your child, and they will be distributed to the respective Learning Group. Thank you!

Lost Property

We would like to remind families that lost property is not collected or stored at the front office.

Effort is made to return labelled clothing to the child's Learning Group when found.

Please label each item of clothing to make this process easier.

Every building/Learning Group has a lost property collection.

Please check for lost items in your child's learning area.

Sharing Food for Celebrations

We are happy to invite families to bring in food to share for birthdays and celebrations.

We ask that you please comply with our allergy policy and do not include nuts or nut products.

School Carpark

Keeping our students safe is always a top priority, and we remind you of the importance of safety when driving through the school carpark.

In order to maintain the efficient flow of traffic, upon entering the carpark off William Cooper Avenue, please drive as far down the carpark as you can to let your child/ren out of your vehicle. Please do not stop at the top end of the carpark near the entry as this prevents other vehicles from entering the carpark and holds up traffic along William Cooper Avenue. We ask that parents/carers do not exit their vehicles as this can slow down traffic flow and there are repercussions for other motorists. If you need to assist your child/ren to exit your vehicle, you will need to park in a parking bay. Parents/carers and visitors are encouraged to use the rear car park off Mabo Boulevard to park in order to drop-off/pick-up students, or to park for extended periods throughout the school day.

Thank you for your assistance in following this routine so we can provide a safer environment for everyone.

Storytime in the Library

During Book Week and Literacy Week we had story time in the library and due to popular demand we are excited to announce we will be continuing this initiative.

Storytime takes place every morning 8.45-8.55am in the library or in front of the library on sunny days. All children, along with parents with non-school age children are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you at Storytime!

Year 6 Shirts

If you’ve been around the school lately you most likely have spotted our year 6 students wearing bright colourful year 6 t-shirts. Yes! You read that right, we've finally got them.

Our year 6 shirts took a lot of hard work to finally get to this stage as firstly all the students in year 6 drew their own interpretation of what they think our year 6 shirt should look like. Then we all had a vote and the top five were then handed to an aboriginal artist who created 3 designs. We voted again and decided which one we liked the best.

The Year 6 shirts have a huge palm tree and island on the front representing how Neville Bonner was born under a palm tree. It has a sunrise scenery to represent our building name Birimbigang (which means sunrise). It has an ocean at the back symbolizing our class names all containing something related to water. It has four Birds on the back to symbolise our year 6 teachers, and finally all our names are written on the back in rows.

Music Specialist Page

At Neville Bonner Primary our school song ‘Yunggaballi’ is a symbol of our core values and identity. Children regularly sing the song at assemblies and in music lessons. You may have heard the song being played as the morning bell to begin the day. The refrain uses Ngunnawal language to depict three symbolic elements:

Yunggaballi – sing

Murranga – hand

Gadi – search for knowledge

As a musical project we decided to record a version of the children singing the song to use for our morning bell. Several students volunteered to lend their voices and record themselves singing into a microphone to contribute to a choir of voices that can be heard each morning.
