Newsletter: Term 4 - Week 3

A Message from the Principal

Time seems to be moving quickly this term where we are already at the end of week 3. I trust our families who celebrate Diwali had a great time with family and friends at the beginning of this week. A number of our teachers and assistants are hosting a morning tea at school today to celebrate with all of our staff.

Book packs and Subscriptions – The website for our 2023 book packs went live at the end of last week. You should now have an email from the school with details on how to purchase in advance of the 2023 school year. You will notice we have added the cost per child of Seesaw and Mathletics or Reading Eggs (dependant on the year group) to this list. For those who seek book packs elsewhere, we will be sending out information early next year on how you can make a contribution to this cost. We also sent out a subscription permission form out last week and have thus far had over 200 responses. Many thanks to the families who have filled this in. We ask that all families fill this online form out at your earliest convenience.

Peer Selections - During this week and next week your child will complete a peer selection sheet which will be used in our class formation process later this term. We will ensure that each child has at least one of their selections in their 2023 class. Teachers are aware of dynamics that may not work in the classroom and will consider these when formulating classes. If you have any strong concerns about 2023, please contact the executive teacher of your child’s area.

Remembrance Day – This year our Defence Support Mentor, Sam Diplock, will be organising a Remembrance Day Assembly which we will hold a day early, on Thursday 10 November at 10:30am. As well as observing Remembrance Day we will be selling wrist bands, poppy seeds and badges, all of which are $2 from the school canteen over week 4 and week 5.

World Teachers Day – Many thanks to our P and C, and the wonderful Carolin who provided a wonderful array of slice and cakes to mark World Teachers’ Day. These were greatly appreciated by our staff.

Loud Shirt day – Last Friday’s Loud Shirt Day was well supported by the community where many of our students and staff dressed up in loud clothing. We raised $850 for the Shepherd Centre through gold coin donations. Our wonderful P and C have also chosen to match this effort, donating a further $850 to the cause. Thank you everyone for your support.

Year 6 Camp – Our Year 6 students have spent the last two nights away on school camp at Camp Cooba, which is situated between Cooma and Jindabyne. During their stay they have had access to a wide range of outdoor activities and will no doubt arrive back at Neville Bonner exhausted. School camps can only occur if we have staff willing to attend, and in this instance five of our staff have given up their evenings and accepted limited sleep to ensure our students can have this experience. Thank you to Katie from the front office, our three year 6 teachers, Callum, Gen and Emily, and Kerry our Year 6 executive for giving up your time.

PBL Update

This week brings us into our next fortnightly focus. We are in the right place at the right time. This focus comes under our safe expectation. Students will discuss and go for walks around the school to ensure all students know where they are allowed to play. They will focus on when the bell goes we go straight to class and when it is playtime students are in the right place. To support this focus you can ask your child- Where are you allowed to play at break 1 and break 2?

This week we have sent home a copy of our PBL Matrix as an attachment to the newsletter. This matrix outlines all of the expectations in the different areas of the school. We are asking that if you have any feedback please complete this Google form. Please click on this link to complete the form. We would love to hear your thoughts on the different areas of the playground and how we can continue to make our school thrive.

Market Day

Neville Bonner Primary School will be hosting our annual Market Day in week 5 on Friday 11 October 2022.

Each Learning Group will develop and host their own stall, which could include a game, a craft item or food.

The children are asked to bring up to $5.00 each (no more) in a ziplock bag (labelled with their name) in loose coins on the day, so that they can visit a number of stalls.

All money raised on the day will be reinvested into the school to buy resources to support the children’s learning.

If you have any further questions about Market Day, please do not hesitate to ask your Learning Group teacher.

We look forward to a great Market Day!

Remembrance Day

Neville Bonner Primary School will be holding a Remembrance Day assembly on Thursday 10 November 2022 in the Hall.

The ceremony will commence at 10:30am and we extend an invitation to all Australian Defence families and encourage the wearing of uniforms for this occasion.

All Defence families with students at the school are welcome to join us. The assembly will be followed by light refreshments in the Community room.

Please RSVP to sam.diplock@ed.act.edu.au by Tuesday 8 November 2022, for catering purposes.

School Carpark

Keeping our students safe is always a top priority, and we remind you of the importance of safety when driving through the school carpark.

In order to maintain the efficient flow of traffic, upon entering the carpark off William Cooper Avenue, please drive as far down the carpark as you can to let your child/ren out of your vehicle. Please do not stop at the top end of the carpark near the entry as this prevents other vehicles from entering the carpark and holds up traffic along William Cooper Avenue. We ask that parents/carers do not exit their vehicles as this can slow down traffic flow and there are repercussions for other motorists. If you need to assist your child/ren to exit your vehicle, you will need to park in a parking bay. Parents/carers and visitors are encouraged to use the rear car park off Mabo Boulevard to park in order to drop-off/pick-up students, or to park for extended periods throughout the school day.

Thank you for your assistance in following this routine so we can provide a safer environment for everyone.

Storytime in the Library

During Book Week and Literacy Week we had story time in the library and due to popular demand we are excited to announce we will be continuing this initiative.

Storytime takes place every morning 8.45-8.55am in the library or in front of the library on sunny days. All children, along with parents with non-school age children are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you at Storytime!

Amaroo Orientation

Year 3 Learning Page

The Fish Campaigners have been learning about the sun, moon and Earth this semester in Science. We have been looking at how the planets rotate and orbit the sun. We have been looking at the sun as a light source and what happens when a planet is not facing the sun. We also discussed how and when we get seasons.

We have made some art on seasons and have demonstrated our knowledge through drawing and explaining how the Earth and moon rotate and orbit.

Here are some facts we have learnt;

Imogen - Orbiting is when an object is spinning around another object.

Leem - Rotating is when an object spins while on its axis.

Shrita - That all of our planets orbit the sun.

Carter - That the Earth orbits around the sun and the moon orbits around the Earth.

Issa - One whole orbit of Earth is one year or 365 days.

Maisie - That when an object goes around another object it is orbiting.

Yasmin - We have seasons because when the Earth spins around the sun. When we are closer to the sun it is summer and when we are far away it is winter.

Richie - The Earth orbits around the sun and when it goes to each side it is a different season.

Baxter - When the sun gets blocked it creates a shadow.

Demi - The Earth spins on an axis.

Sophia - The moon orbits the Earth.

Joey - Shadows are made when an object blocks the sun.

Lueth - The Earth rotates around the sun.

Raaina - The Earth orbits around the sun and the moon orbits the Earth.

Nikhil - The Earth spins on its axis for 365 days.

Sahbella - We get day and night because the Earth rotates on its axis.

Fatima - The moon orbits the Earth and the Earth orbits the sun.

Inaya - The Earth spins on its axis and it takes 365 days to go around the sun.
