Newsletter: Term 4 - Week 5

A Message from the Principal

Remembrance Day – Yesterday we held our Remembrance Day whole school assembly. Students from defence force families compered the event under the expert direction of our Defence Support Mentor, Sam Diplock. Our students were wonderful throughout the assembly showing respect and appreciation for this important occasion. It was nice to have a number of our defence parents attend the assembly and then join us for a morning tea. Many thanks to all involved in ensuring this important occasion was commemorated sensitively. Special thanks to Sam Diplock for her preparation and leading of this assembly.

Market Day – After a lot of preparation from our students and staff, and some contributions from many of our families, we finally had our Market Day today. It was a wonderful event, where students from across the school participated with excitement and energy. Our market day committee led by Kerry put a lot of work into the build up to this event, to ensure that it was a memorable occasion. Well done to all involved.

School Improvement Focus – You may be aware that the school’s strategic plan focuses on both improving Mathematics and Reading outcomes. This year our focus has largely been on literacy practices where we have focussed on embedding consistent literacy practices within and across our year groups. We have engaged with instructional mentors from the school improvement sections of the Education Directorate who have worked alongside our leadership team ensuring that we had developed agreed understandings within our leadership team before working with our teachers. The areas of particular focus this year have been on Essential Literacy Practice 1, Deliberate, research-informed efforts to foster literacy motivation and engagement within and across lessons, and Essential Literacy Practice 2, Read alouds of age-appropriate books and other materials. As a results of this we have seen an obvious improvement in literacy rich environments across our classrooms and more targeted planning of read alouds. Our focus for 2023 will continue in the literacy space where we will concentrate much of our professional learning time on differentiated small groups instruction using the readers and writers workshop model. We will endeavour to provide regular updates in the newsletter of our work in this space.

2023 Reminders – As promised I will continue to ensure we are regularly reminding parents of bookpacks, subscription and school leaver actions.

Book pack information – Please click here

Subscription permission – Please click here – We need all families to complete this if you haven’t already done so.

School Leavers form – Please click here

Islamic Education Parent Approval – As mentioned earlier in the year, for our families who observe the Islamic faith, in 2023 we will be offering an Islamic Education in Schools program at Neville Bonner School.

Much like the Christian Education in Schools program which is in many ACT schools, this program will see trained volunteers from the Canberra Muslim Community come in and teach Islam. The teaching syllabus is the same Syllabus used in NSW Public Schools.

The weekly class will be held during the first of our students’ play breaks and will start from the beginning of Term 1 next year. If you would like your child to participate please provide your details and register here before Monday 28 November.

Teacher Planning Day – I’d like to remind parents that the final teacher planning day is on Monday 28 November. Should you need to send your child to school on this day please contact the front office on 6142 1201 or via nevillebonnerps@ed.act.edu.au .

Amaroo Orientation

Year 2 Learning Page

The Fair Fishers have been learning about procedures in english and mixtures in science. They have been doing different experiments and writing the procedures. Some of the fun we have had is making fairy bread, volcanos in a cup, playdough, rain clouds and bubble blowing, and this is what we thought.

What was your favourite experiment/procedure and why?

Ahmed – Volcano in a cup because it looks cool when you mix vinegar and baking soda together. The bubbles are all different sizes.

Dina – The playdough because I got to do it all by myself

Mackenize – The fairy bread because I like making things I can eat, and I like cooking.

Amiin - The fairy bread because I like sprinkles

Natalia – The playdough because you can make anything you like with it and make it different colours

La’keisha – The play dough because it was really fun and lots of steps to follow. I even got to choose the colour.

Olivia – The play dough because you can play with it and even take it home.

Banh – The play dough because we got to mix it and play with it. I even got to take it home.

Amelie – Fairy bread because I got to eat it and it’s fun and easy to make.

Tejas – The play dough because I got to take it home. It was fun mixing the food die into the mixture.

Jett – The volcano in a cup because it was so cool and fizzled a lot.

Umayma – The play dough because I liked how it felt when it was finished. It was fluffy.

Maria – The play dough because it was fun to make and mix with the spoon. It felt really good when it was finished

Isabel – The play dough because it was soft and stretchy. When you mix it, it feels good

Ethan w – Play dough because you can stretch it out and make stuff.

Ethan A – The volcano in a cup because it erupted. I liked it.

Jamie – The volcano in a cup because it was super fun.

Library

Dear Families,

It is that time of year where we need to ensure all the library books are back in the library. Borrowing will cease on Friday the 18 November and all books are due back to the library by Friday the 25 of November. Look out for a note that will be coming home with a list of the books your child has that are due back. Please call or come and see me if you have any questions or would like further information about the list of books you receive.

Remember to keep reading over the holidays! Thank you for your co-operation,

Jane Hellyar

This everyday object is so GREAT!! (Keira, year 4). "The hairbrush was light and easy to use. With frizzy hair, it was difficult with dry hair, but works well (even with knots) if the hair had been shampoo and conditioned." From Parent of Jasmine (Year 1) and Brooke (Year 3)
