Newsletter: Term 4 - Week 8

A Message from the Principal

Parent Thank you – We had our parent thank you morning tea in the staff room on Monday morning. It was great for us to recognise some of our volunteers that have supported the school this year. We will continue to welcome parent volunteers next year. We had a committed band of parent who support our Kindergarten students this year and would certainly welcome more volunteering in 2024. Thank you to all of our parents who have supported the school through the P and C, School board, helping in classrooms, or supporting whole school events such as our sports carnival. This support is greatly appreciated.

Book Packs – Just a reminder to families that bookpacks are still available from WINC and will receive free delivery to the school if ordered before Friday 15 December. Should you purchase afterwards, bookpacks will be sent to your home and your child can bring this to school on the first day back.

Mr Huff and PBL Signage

A reminder that the students will be viewing the Mr Huff show on Wednesday or Thursday of next week. This show is a production from Meercat Productions that uses song, mime and puppets to bring to life the picture book Mr Huff. This will be an enjoyable end of year performance and celebration for our students for once again filling up our token tubes. An email was sent to parents regarding this performance. Any parents who do not want their child to participate should have let their child's teacher know. Next week we will hopefully have some images to share of this performance.

Also next week you may notice some new signs around our school. This year we have designed signs to reinforce our PBL expectations. There will be signs in the various areas of the playground that students, teachers and the community can refer to for the expectations. We will also include some images of these next week.

Fortnightly Focus Week 7 & 8- We use kind and respectful language

Lost Property

We have a large amount of lost property this time of year. The first place to check for lost items is in the learning areas. We do not collect lost property at reception. Please label your child's belongings as this make it much easier to return them.

We have set up an un-named lost property trolley outside of the reception air lock doors within the school. If your child is missing any items that did not have names on them, please come to check and collect them anytime during school hours, 8.30-3.30.

All unclaimed items will be donated to the uniform shop, sick bay, or good will at the end of week 9.

ACT Public School Inquiry

Inquiry into literacy and numeracy in ACT public schools

The ACT Government announced an independent inquiry into literacy and numeracy performance in the ACT. Through the inquiry we will gain local insights into the opportunities for strengthening literacy and numeracy outcomes for all ACT public school students, with a particular focus on equity. The inquiry will also look at how supports for educators and students could be enhanced.

The inquiry is an opportunity to look at what we are doing well and opportunities to strengthen our education system.

How to get involved

An independent Expert Panel will lead the inquiry. They will consider the views of academics, educators, unions, parents and carers, and students. This will be done through calls for public submissions and stakeholder engagement.

To view the Panel Membership, Terms of Reference and more you can visit: www.education.act.gov.au/literacyandnumeracyinquiry

10th Anniversary Art Show

Mix 106.3 Kristen and Nige Breakfast Show

We're thrilled to announce that on Friday 15 December from 6am to 9am, our school will be buzzing with excitement as we welcome Kristen and Nige, the hosts of Mix 106.3 Breakfast Show, right here on site! Following the immense success of last year's Pack the Bus campaign, we're gearing up for another fantastic event.

Join us for a morning filled with laughter, fun activities, and entertainment as we bid farewell to this school year. To make this celebration even more enjoyable, Mix 106.3 are organising a delightful BBQ breakfast.

A giving tree will be proudly displayed in our reception area from week 7. You can contribute by dropping off your generous donations of non-perishable food items and unwrapped new toys under the tree. Your donations will make a difference in the lives of families in need this holiday season and will be wrapped and distributed by Communities@Work.

On the day of the event, the Mix 106.3 charity bus will be parked right here at Neville Bonner Primary School, and Kristen and Nige will be on site to thank you for your generosity. Let's come together, make a difference, and spread the joy of giving this festive season. See you on December 15th!

Viral Gastro

We are seeing a number of sick children at school. To stop the spread of viral gastro we would like to remind everyone of the advice from ACT Government health fact sheet:

"Do people need to be excluded from school or work?

Anyone with vomiting or diarrhoea should rest at home and not attend work, school or childcare, or visit a hospital or residential care facility, until vomiting and diarrhoea have stopped for 48 hours. During this time they should not prepare food for others, or care for patients, children or the elderly."

Parents' and Citizens' Association

Neville Bonner Parents and Citizens Committee

Our P&C provides services to the school such as canteen, second hand uniform shop, disco and other activities. Without a P&C, we cannot continue to do these things.

For more information on our committee and event notices and updates, please head to the P&C Facebook or the Neville Bonner P&C page We are always happy to accept new members into the P&C and event volunteers as well - send us an email.

More information about our canteen; lunch orders with flexischools, over the counter sales and birthday cupcakes, as well as the uniform shop can be found on the P&C component of the school website.

Second Hand Uniform Shop

Neville Bonner Primary School P&C Second Hand Uniform Stall will be closed for the remainder of 2023.

We are looking for stall volunteers for 2024. The best day can be up to you, previously Wednesday's have been either:

- 8.45am to 9.45am (usually around Junior Assembly timing); or
- 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Training on the use of the tablet and EFTPOS Square will be provided.

If you have good quality school uniform items you no longer need, the P&C will gratefully accept your donation to our second hand uniform stall through the canteen (or please place them in the tub near the front office).

Scholastic Book Club
Issue 8 orders have closed and we will endeavour to have the Club items returned to the school by the end of the school year.

The Scholastic Book Club will return in 2024, with two issues per Term, and a great range of books, puzzles, and other items available in each catalogue.

Don’t forget 20% of every sale is given to the P&C in ‘rewards’ that the school can use to purchase resources from the catalogues.

This year the P&C has been able to contribute over $2000 towards books for the school library, thanks to purchases throughout the year.

Gardening Crew
Do you like spending time outside, gardening or pulling weeds? Or perhaps you would like to learn about gardening? If you have answered yes to any of these then you may like to spend a few hours each month helping to maintain our kitchen garden space. P&C are looking for volunteers who would like to join our gardening crew as we embark on a 10 month project to bring life back to our kitchen garden space.

Keep an eye on the P&C Facebook Page for Gardening Bees coming up in the school holidays.

CARDBOARD BOXES

We need boxes, preferably without any plastics on them, as we are looking to cover the existing beds to smother the weeds and grasses, as the first stage to rejuvenation.

We're happy to take any donations, the larger the better.

Please drop them through the red gates, onto the concrete, at the top of the school closest to the Bonner Traffic Lights.

Please let the P&C Facebook Messenger know when you do too, so we can ensure they don't become a littering hazard.
